February Native Prairie Speaker Series - In-Person

Title: This grassland is juussst right: monitoring and conserving grassland songbird species that choose different habitat
Date: Thursday February 6th, 2025 7:00pm CT
Speaker: Julia Put, Resource Management Officer II, Grasslands National Park
Location: At the Grasslands Inn in Mankota, SK

About this Presentation:
Grassland songbird species that depend on native grasslands have experienced dramatic declines, and several species are federally listed as species at risk as a result. Grassland songbirds evolved in landscapes that experienced frequent and variable levels of disturbance through processes like fire and grazing that create a mosaic of habitats. We aimed to estimate the densities of different grassland songbird species through space and time in Grasslands National Park, to inform habitat management programs (i.e., prescribed fire and grazing), monitor progress toward population recovery objectives and contribute to the reporting of ecological integrity. From 2021-2024, 614 in-person bird surveys were performed inside the park. We have begun working closely with partners to ensure that our survey methods are aligned, allowing us to compare how the populations are doing inside and outside the park boundary.

About the Speaker:
Julia Put is a Resource Management Officer at Grasslands National Park. She has been at the park for four years and leads the sage grouse, songbird, and bat programs on the species-at-risk team. For her MSc, she studied the effects of organic farming and agricultural landscape composition on bat activity.
