Tour stops

Agassiz Research and Development Centre

The first stop on the morning of Dec. 1 is the Agassiz Research and Development Centre for an Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC)-forage cropping systems research tour. Established in 1886, Agassiz RDC is the lead centre in Canada for integrated research on peri-urban agriculture. Research focuses on developing intensive yet sustainable horticultural and forage management systems that are integrated within a peri-urban environment.

Modern dairy farms: Holberg Farm Ltd. and Hoek Holsteins

Following lunch, we will visit two modern dairies - Holberg Farm Ltd. with hosts Holger and Alex Schwichtenberg and Hoek Holsteins with hosts Greg and Vince Vander Hoek. Both farms participate in the B.C. Living Labs (Dairy Industry) component and the hosts will speak about forages in their operations; discuss real-life climate impacts and how they are adapting; as well as the multiple dairy farming challenges associated with milk production in a peri-urban environment. Both will include tours of modern barns, equipment and approaches.
