February Native Prairie Speaker Series - Webinar

Title: Piping Plovers and the 2024 Prairie Canada Piping Plover Census Results
Date: Thursday February 6th, 2025 12:00pm CT
Speaker: Ashley Vass, Habitat Stewardship Coordinator, Nature Saskatchewan

About this Webinar:
Piping Plovers are small, migratory shorebirds that breed on sparsely-vegetated beaches or sandy
saline flats. After being listed as Endangered, the first International Piping Plover Census (IPPC) was
conducted in 1991. The IPPC is a concerted effort to count all Piping Plovers in Canada, the USA,
Mexico, and the Caribbean, every five years, making it the longest running shorebird census to cover
the entire range of a species. After the 7th IPPC was put on hiatus, initially due to COVID-19, Nature
Saskatchewan in partnership with the Canadian Wildlife Service, launched a Prairie Canada Piping
Plover Census coordinated with many partners and volunteers across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and
Manitoba. In this presentation we will talk Piping Plover basics, dig into the details of the 2024 Prairie
Canada Piping Plover Census results, and learn what you can do for Piping Plovers including Nature
Saskatchewan’s Plovers on Shore stewardship program.

About the Speaker:
Ashley Vass received her M.Sc. in Biology from the University of Regina and has been working with
Saskatchewan’s species at risk since 2008. She has been with Nature Saskatchewan working with the
Stewards of Saskatchewan programs for over a decade, including work with the Plovers on Shore
program. This year she took a brief hiatus from her permanent role as Habitat Stewardship Coordinator
for the Rare Plant Rescue program, to coordinate a Prairie Canada Piping Plover Census in partnership
with the Canadian Wildlife Service.

PCAP’s Native Prairie Speaker Series is a monthly webinar about prairie conservation or species at
risk.
